Summer Camp – Camp Cheval
Camp Cheval is offered in the summer for children on a traditional school calendar and during ‘track out’ times throughout the year for the year-round student. It is designed to provide campers with a safe, fun and educational riding experience, for those new to horses as well as for the accomplished rider. Camp Cheval, in order to serve everyone's needs, is divided into Track Out Camp, Full Day Camp and Half Day Camp. All campers are divided into small groups according to riding ability and students are mounted on horses appropriate to their skills. Camp Information Camp Application The Camp Schedule The typical day at camp is packed with activities. Campers arrive between 8:30 and 9:00 so the day can begin promptly at 9:00. On the first day, campers are divided into small groups based on riding ability. Each group will devote time in the morning to: learning varied aspects of horse care and husbandry, preparing the horse to ride by grooming and tacking, and mounting the horse for a formal riding lesson.
Half-day campers follow the same format but depart at 12:30 pm. Full day campers are able to repeat the morning schedule with new ground lessons and another mounted riding lesson in the afternoon. MacNair's Country Acres does offer an indoor riding ring to accommodate our least experienced riders. We maximize the use of the indoor ring on rainy days to give riders as much time in the saddle as is possible, weather permitting. (We do reserve the right to amend the riding scheduling for inclement weather such as thunderstorms or excessive heat.)
On Fridays, parents and friends are invited to watch their children exhibit the skills they have acquired. The campers begin with a ground presentation and then display their newly acquired riding prowess. The Friday demonstrations range from walking, steering and trotting to negotiating a course of jumps.
Summer All Day/Track Out Camp - 8 to 16 years of age - Monday - Thursday 9am - 5pm, Friday 9am - 2pm (campers are welcome to stay until 5 pm if needed). - Full-day campers typically ride twice a day. The first riding lesson of the day develops targeted-skills. In the afternoon, students participate in such activities as mounted games, bareback riding, trail rides, etc. Additionally, full-day campers will have two ground, or un-mounted, lessons each focused on learning horsemanship, acquiring a greater understanding of horses and becoming more comfortable around them. - Students in full-day camp are grouped by skill-level. Every week we have groups for beginner riders as well as for intermediate and advanced riders. Therefore, instruction is tailored to each student’s proficiency and educational level. Our experienced instructors have something to offer even the most advanced riders. Dressage and jumping instruction is available for these upper-level riders. - On Fridays we will hold an exhibition for parents and friends. Students will demonstrate their newly acquired mounted and horsemanship skills.
Half Day Camp - 6 to 9 years of age - Monday through Friday from 9am to 12:30pm - Half-day campers will have the opportunity to ride once daily and learn grooming, tacking and leading horses as well as basic horsemanship knowledge. - Half-day campers will be grouped into small riding groups based on skill levels so that riders receive the most individualized instruction possible. - Half-day campers will have an exhibition on Friday morning. Students will demonstrate their new horsemanship and riding skills to their families.
Year Round Track Out Camp - 6-16 years of age - Offered September through May - Monday through Wednesday from 9am to 12:30pm - Track Out campers will have the opportunity to ride once daily and will also learn skills such as grooming, tacking and leading horses, as well as basic horsemanship knowledge. - Campers will be divided into age and level-appropriate classes for riding. Other activities will be done as a group.

Junior Invitational Workshops The Junior Invitational, held during the summer, is a series of consecutive workshops, specifically for those who are interested in showing and desire intense instruction. Riders not currently in our Riding School may, if they wish to attend, schedule an evaluation ride with the Director of the Riding School prior to camp. This private lesson will allow the Director to place the rider in a appropriate group. MacNair's riders at Elementary III or Intermediate levels are eligible for the Junior Invitational.
The sessions last most of the day with a break for lunch and are spread over five days. Riders are split into teams and take lessons with their coaches as well as participating in special clinics. The final day culminates in a competition. Junior Invitational riders must be willing to work hard.
